By 2024, the Coast Guard's vessels in the Nordkapp class are to be replaced by three new Coast Guard vessels in the Jan Mayen class. On Friday 27 January, the hull of the third coastguard vessel KV Hopen, Vard Langsten, arrives in Tomrefjord. Since 20 December, the vessel has been under tow from the Vard Tulcea shipyard in Romania. During 2023 and 2024, KV Hopen will transition from being a hull to becoming a fully equipped coast guard vessel.

"We are happy that the third vessel has arrived in Norway. An intensive period of equipment, testing and completion awaits before the vessel is put into operation. KV Hopen, together with the other two vessels in the Jan Mayen class, will become a very important resource with its capacities and ability to operate in the entire area of interest to Norway, including Arctic waters," says project manager Odd Magne Nilsen in Defense Materials.

One of the largest maritime defense procurements ever

The main contract to build three helicopter-carrying and ice-strengthened vessels between Defense Materiel and VARD was signed on 25 June 2018. The total cost frame for the project itself is NOK 7.2 billion, and is one of the largest defense procurements made in the maritime sector in Norway.

The Vard group is a major national player in the construction of specialized vessels with three shipyards located in Norway. They have previously, among other things, built several vessels for the Norwegian Armed Forces. The proportion of Norwegian subcontractors is also large, and contributes to further developing national expertise and capacity within the maritime industry.

Handover by KV Jan Mayen

The first coast guard vessel KV Jan Mayen arrived in Norway in autumn 2021, and will now be phased into the Coast Guard in the first half of the year. According to the plan, the second vessel, KV Bjørnøya, is to be handed over in mid-2023, while the third, KV Hopen, is to be delivered in 2024.
